Il Senato decise di chiamare l'altare Ara Pacis Augustae, per celebrare la pax augustea, cioè la pacificazione delle regioni che avevano sofferto per le dispute tra capi rivali e il ripristino dell'ordine e della legalità all'interno dell'Urbe. Accanto all'altare, il Senato decretò nello stesso 13 a.C. fosse costruito un horologium.
